As a trustee, my decisions in this role will be grounded in what is in the best interest of DSBN students; I believe that all actions taken at the public board should stem from an inherent desire to advocate for what is in the best interest of DSBN students.
Fiscal responsibility to ensure student success; As a trustee it is important to make sure the board has the fiscal space needed to meet student educational needs, and to continue investing in learning technologies, school facilities, and supporting educators, to ensure a high-quality education for DSBN students.
Supporting and championing public education; As a former DSBN student from JK to high-school graduate, I have experienced first-hand the positive impact our public board provides within the Niagara Region. I am grateful for the educational opportunities the DSBN provides for its students, and I am running in this election because I believe that public education is important to the Niagara community. If elected as a trustee, it is my goal to work towards further expanding the quality of education our public board provides to DSBN students.
Biography
My name is Zach Maves, and I am running for public school board trustee with the DSBN to represent students in Niagara Falls.I am a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, with a deep love for Niagara’s history and breathtaking beauty, as well as the strong sense of community within the city.A staunch advocate for public education, I am grateful for the time I spent in the public board from junior kindergarten all the way up to high school graduation at Westlane Secondary School. After my time at Westlane, I attended both of the Niagara Region’s public post-secondary institutions, Niagara College Canada, located in Welland, Ontario, and Brock University, nested in neighbouring Saint Catharines. As a result of the support others and myself received from the DSBN’s dedicated educational staff, I now hold an Ontario College Diploma in Police Foundations, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy.In my free time it is hard to find me without a book in my hands, I love to read and learn at every opportunity. When I am not nose deep in a book, you can find me spending time with my grandparents, or volunteering in the Niagara community with my involvement in the Saint Andrews Children and Youth Ministry Team.The reason I began volunteering with the Saint Andrews Children and Youth Ministry Team after finishing my undergraduate degree, was to try and give those younger than me the same experience that I and others shared while participating in youth group growing up. I am running for public school board trustee because I understand the significant impact public education provides for the Niagara community. Like my volunteer experience, I would like to get involved with our public-school board to work towards ensuring current and future DSBN students' educational needs are met. Other former DSBN students and I were given the opportunity for personal growth and development while in the public board, as well as having our public education open new doors to future careers and employment opportunities, and I believe that current and future DSBN students should have access to those same, and expanded opportunities.If elected as trustee, I plan to work with other members of the board to advocate for what is in the best interest of DSBN students. I believe that working to meet student educational needs is best achieved through continuing to invest in learning technologies, addressing the operating needs of aging school facilities, and supporting educators in the classroom.
